He was also the Los Angeles Times’ Baghdad bureau chief. Daragahi, a US citizen of Iranian heritage, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2005 for his coverage of Iraq and led the bureau that was a 2007 Pulitzer finalist for its Iraq coverage. He was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2010 for his coverage of the 2009 Iranian election protests. He has reported from Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and the rest of the Middle East. Before joining the Los Angeles Times in 2005, he worked as a freelance journalist for a variety of periodicals and radio stations, including the Newark Star-Ledger in New Jersey. He also made contributions to the Marketplace radio show. For the Associated Press, he covered the buildup to the United States’ invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Daragahi moved on to a new post in Beirut in 2007. The Los Angeles Times published a front-page memoir of his time in Iraq on April 10, 2007. The article explains the strategies used by reporters working in potentially dangerous situations, as well as personal insights into the consequences of terror and stress on journalists reporting in battle zones. Daragahi joined the Financial Times as the Middle East and North Africa correspondent in Cairo in September 2011. Daragahi joined BuzzFeed News as a Middle East reporter in April 2015. He began working for The Independent in September of 2018.
