Bedelia studied ballet and performed in a few productions with the New York City Ballet, such as The Nutcracker, before she became an actress. She only appeared in one dancing role on television, that of Clara in Playhouse 90’s rendition of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker (1958). Bedelia played Sandy Porter on a regular basis on the CBS soap opera Love of Life from 1961 to 1967. She also performed on Broadway, where she made her stage debut in Isle of Children in 1962 as Patty Duke’s sidekick and won a Theatre World Award in 1966 for her performance as the title character in My Sweet Charlie.

In 1969, Bedelia made her acting debut in The Gypsy Moths. Later that year, in They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, she gained notoriety as the pregnant marathon dancer. She played a dramatic role in The Strange Vengeance of Rosalie (1972) and Between Friends (1973), starred in the comedy Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), and co-starred with Richard Dreyfuss in the comedy The Big Fix (1972).
