Bob Lape Biography

Bob Lape is an American writer, radio journalist, restaurant critic, and fine-dining reviewer. Before becoming a founding member of the Eyewitness News team at WABC-TV in New York City in 1968, Lape served as a reporter and news director at WCUE in Akron, Ohio; WICE in Providence, Rhode Island; and WBZ in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lape anchored WCUE in Akron, Ohio, WICE in Providence, Rhode Island, and WBZ in Boston, Massachusetts, before joining WABC-TV in New York City as part of the Eyewitness News team. and served as news director. The column became the most popular. The series was published 1,200 times in 12 years and was called “the leader of Food Network TV” by editor Drew Nieporent. Rapp also reviewed video and plays for WABC-TV as well as WBZ-TV and WKBG-TV in Boston. After leaving People’s News, he hosted a call-in show on WABC (AM)’s “The Bob Rupp Food Show” and wrote a restaurant column for the New York Law Journal.

He also serves as an online correspondent for ABC News. Crain’s restaurant review on New York Business has been its most popular column in its 24-year history, and “Bob Lape’s Food Diary” has aired on WCBS since 1986 and focuses on food analysis, trends and events. Lape is the author of Epicurean Rendezvous magazine (1990-1996) and Bob Lape’s Restaurant Index (1987-1991) (with art by Milton Glaser). Rapp wrote “The Temptation of Bacon” with Joanna Pruss. He is a member of the Ohio Broadcasting Hall of Fame, Friars Club, Le Cordon Bleu and the Italian Sommelier

Awards

Bob Lape’s awards include Kent State University’s 2022 Alumni Professional Achievement Award, the Order of Merit from Switzerland in 2004, and the 1960s News Broadcasting Emmy Award in 1980; one of the UPI Toms · Phillips Award for announced news; and received a presidential certificate for his coverage of WBZ’s Northeast power outage. He ran the combined radio and television division of WBZ, the area’s only news agency.
