His father was the pastor of two congregations, one in Windsor, Ontario, called Mount Zion Church of God in Christ in Canada, and the other in Detroit, Michigan, called Mount Zion Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, both of which belonged to the Church of God in Christ, Inc. (COGIC) denomination. He had the musical ability as a child. He sang with his brothers, Bishop C.L. Morton Jr., Bishop James H. Morton, and the lesser-known, George Morton, and became well-known in the United States. He was also the founder of the Junior Progressives, a young singing group, and the director of his father’s church’s Youth Choir.
