Bill Williams Career
Williams started working at WBIR in 1977. He left WBIR in December of 2000. When his replacement left the station, he returned to the anchor desk for much of 2006, and re-retired at the end of the year. He is now an anchor emeritus, and he does some reporting on the side. On WBIR, he currently co-hosts the Friends Across the Mountains Telethon as well as the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon. Williams also volunteers with Mission of Hope, an aid program for people in rural Appalachia. Williams returned to the anchor desk in February 2013 to host a “Retro Newscast” on WBIR alongside former WBIR anchor Edye Ellis, former WBIR sports director Bob Kesling, and now former WBIR anchor Moira Kaye, who was a weekend weather forecaster. Williams has been involved with Mission of Hope since its inception in 1996. Mission of Hope is an outreach program dedicated to assisting the people and children of rural Appalachia. He has also contributed significantly to charitable causes.

Williams has received the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ “Silver Circle Award” in the past. Carson-Newman College (now Carson-Newman University) conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. In his honor, the City of Knoxville renamed Hutchinson Avenue, where WBIR’s studios are located, “Bill Williams Avenue” in December 2010.
