Following the popularity of Bill Nye the Science Guy, Nye began work on a return project called The Eyes of Nye, which is aimed at an adult audience and addresses more sensitive science themes such as genetically engineered food, global warming, and racism. However, “shifting creative concepts, infighting among executives, and financial disputes with Seattle producing station KCTS significantly delayed production for years.” KCTS was limited by funding constraints and was unable to complete a show pilot on time. “KCTS experienced some distress,” Nye recalled. The Eyes of Nye was eventually taken up by American Public Television after PBS declined to distribute it. Co-producer Randy Brinson clarified, saying, “PBS wanted more serious, in-depth Nova-style shows”. After all, the program debuted in 2005, but it was cancelled after just one season. In 1993, James McKenna, Erren Gottlieb, and Elizabeth Brock created a pilot for Bill Nye the Science Guy, a successful educational television show on Seattle’s public broadcasting station KCTS-TV.
