Beverly LaHaye Career

Concerned Women for America was founded by LaHaye in 1979. The National Organization for Women and a 1978 Barbara Walters interview with feminist Betty Friedan prompted CWA to form. Friedan’s purpose, according to LaHaye, was “to undermine the core of American culture: the family,” and Christian women were not included in debates on women’s rights. The birth of CWA was commemorated by a rally hosted by LaHaye in a local San Diego theatre. CWA began as a local organization, but within two years, it had grown to become a national organization. “The nation’s largest public policy women’s organization devoted to biblical ideas,” according to the organization’s website. CWA is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that is “sponsored by hundreds of local chapters across the country.” “CWA [had] become a significant political movement, claiming over half a million members,” Salon reported in 2014.
