Over her life, Bayé pursued a number of jobs. Before deciding to attend college, she started out as a clerk. From 1980 until 1984, Bayé worked as a reporter for the Daily Argus in Mount Vernon, New York. After that, from 1984 to 1986, she worked as a correspondent for The Courier-Journal. From 1986 to 1988, Bayé worked as an assistant city editor at the Courier-Journal. From 1988 to 1990, she was the assistant neighbors editor. She left the Courier in 1990–1991 to join Harvard as a Nieman Fellow. After her leave at Harvard, she went back to work for the newspaper. After nearly thirty years of writing for the Courier, she was let go by Gannett along with many other employees.

Bayé wrote for publications like Main Man, Essence Magazine, and BlackAmericanWed.com. She appeared on the “Travis Smiley Show” and hosted “The Betty Bayé Show” for six years. Bayé was the NABJ’s vice president during that time. The books “The Africans” (1983) and “Blackbird” (2000) are both published by Bayé. Collections “Family Affairs: What It Means to be African American Today” and others feature contributions from Bayé. Betty went on to work as an independent journalist, published novelist, storyteller, and motivational speaker. She utilizes these as means of connecting with other African Americans in order to uphold their value as human beings on par with individuals of other races. Her works frequently make you aware of an angle you might not have otherwise. Bayé works as a lecturer, author, journalist, and TV interviewer.

Her 32-year journalism career included 27 years as a journalistic columnist and editorial board member for The Courier-Journal. For six years, she was the host of her own program, “The Betty Baye Show”. She is also the head of the Black Family Conference at the University of Louisville.
