Bratt was born as the third of five children to Eldy (née Banda), a nurse and political activist, and Peter Bratt Sr., a sheet metal worker.  His mother, an activist for Native American rights, took Bratt (age 6) and her other children to Alcatraz in 1969 to take part in the occupation. Bratt attended Lowell High School in San Francisco and was a member of the Lowell Forensic Society.Bratt received a B.F.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1986, when he joined the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.He enrolled in the M.F.A. program at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco but dropped out before graduating to star in the 1987 television film Juarez.

Benjamin Bratt Blood In, Blood Out

In the film Blood In, Blood Out, he played Paco Aguilar, a former gang member turned LAPD cop. Miklo Velka, a half-Mexican youngster, leaves Las Vegas for East Los Angeles in 1972 with his cousins Paco and Cruz, both members of the Vatos Locos gang. Miklo joins the gang during an attack on their enemies, the Tres Puntos, and is later captured. He is imprisoned in San Quentin for murder, and Paco volunteers for military service in the Marine Corps. Cruz becomes addicted to heroin owing to back discomfort, resulting in his brother’s accidental overdose.

Miklo discovers that San Quentin is controlled by three racial prison gangs: the Black Guerrilla Army (BGA), the Aryan Vanguard, and La Onda. He establishes a connection with Aryan Vanguard associate Big Al before stabbing him to death. Miklo advances through the ranks of La Onda, eventually joining its ruling council. Miklo is given parole after serving nine years in prison and takes part in an armed robbery.

Miklo detects widespread cocaine use and the Aryan Vanguard’s intention to partner with Carlos as a supplier. The warden gives Montana special permission to visit the inmates, putting Miklo in charge. He forms an agreement with the BGA and organizes a coordinated assassination of Aryan Vanguard leaders. The warden breaks La Onda’s ruling council, and it is revealed that Magic sent forged orders to have the BGA kill Montana at Miklo’s request.

Bratt portrayed Detective Rey Curtis on Law & Order. For his participation on the show, he received an Emmy nomination in 1999 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. His role replaced Detective Mike Logan (Chris Noth) on Law & Order. Bratt initially featured in the Season 6 episode “Bitter Fruit”.

He also starred in the franchise’s only movie, “Exiled: A Law & Order Movie,” as well as the Homicide: Life on the Street crossover episodes “For God and Country,” “Baby, It’s You: Part 2,” and “Sideshow: Part 2.”
