In the winter of 1946, a cardboard box containing a note that said, “Her name is Victoria,” was left on the doorstep of the Hammond Foundling Home in New York. I’m unable to look after her.” After the season, the house took her in and gave her the last name “Winters”.
After Victoria turned two, monthly letters addressed to her started to arrive at the house. There was only $50 in cash inside. The letters were postmarked Bangor, Maine, but they were never signed. Victoria’s parents were coming to pick her up, an assistant at the house informed her when she was six years old. For almost two weeks, she felt really unique and happy even though she knew it was untrue.
Victoria, like many of the other kids, was raised in a foundling home and had an unsatisfactory childhood despite never knowing her true family or parents. She once gave a girl a bloody nose after they got into a fight. Because she didn’t like herself and assumed no one else would either, a nine or ten-year-old girl at the home used to push people away. Eventually, a man approached her and continued to speak with her until the girl understood what was wrong.
