Career

In 1980, Dixon started her career in television as a news and sports anchor for Tulsa’s KTUL-TV, the local ABC station. After viewing a recording of Dixon’s work at KTUL, Dennis Swanson, the head of ABC Sports, approached her after she had been covering sports for a number of years. When Dixon joined ABC’s Wide World of Sports as a co-host in 1986, she became the first female anchor of a network sports program. Frank Gifford co-hosted the program with Dixon. Dixon covered big athletic events like the Super Bowl, Winter Olympics, Triple Crown, and World Gymnastics Championships in addition to her co-hosting duties. Before moving back to Tulsa, she briefly co-hosted The Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones show in 1989 after leaving network TV.

Dixon founded the radio company Dixon Productions while he was still in Tulsa. Soon after, Dixon started a statewide program called Oklahomans, which featured the accomplishments of numerous Oklahomans. Over the course of the program’s 23-year run, Dixon spoke with a number of Oklahomans, such as Mickey Mantle, Ron Howard, T. Boone Pickens, David L. Boren, Carrie Underwood, and Garth Brooks. Its run concluded in late 2014 with Oklahomans. At his television company, Taylor Communications, Dixon partnered with Ed Taylor in 1994, a trailblazer in the cable and satellite communications industry. In 1997, Dixon was appointed president of Taylor Communications. She bought Taylor Communications in 2013 and changed the name to AyerPlay.

On May 4, 2016, Dixon received the Sadie Adwon Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of Women in Communications. Dixon is one of seven honorees who were formally inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame on November 17, 2016.
