Ralston was canyoneering alone through Bluejohn Canyon in eastern Wayne County, Utah, on April 26, 2003, just south of Canyonlands National Park’s Horseshoe Canyon area. A dangling rock dislodged when he was climbing down the lower lengths of the slot canyon while he was descending. His left hand was broken by the boulder, which subsequently crushed his right hand against the canyon wall. He was unable to extricate his arm from the chockstone, which weighed 800 pounds (360 kilograms). On the fifth day, he ran out of food and water and opted to drink his own urine.
He climbed out of the slot canyon after freeing himself, rappelled down a 65-foot (20-meter) steep rock, and hiked out one-handed. He was 8 miles (13 kilometers) from his vehicle and without a phone when he came across a family who provided him food and water after trudging for 6 miles (9.7 kilometers). The boulder had to be moved with the help of 13 men, a winch, and a hydraulic jack in order for his arm to be extracted. After that, his arm was cremated, and the ashes were presented to Ralston. He returned to the accident site six months later to tape a special for NBC’s Dateline television network on the disaster.
