After beginning his stand-up comedy career, Athari began working on skits alongside Muslim-American comedians Hasan Minhaj, Asif Ali, and Fahim Anwar as part of the group Goatface. In 2018, Comedy Central presented a one-hour program featuring their sketches. He appeared as Gabe on HBO’s Silicon Valley in its last season. Athari also co-hosts the unscripted podcast “This Is Americans Live,” which is a parody of the radio program This American Life. In 2021, Athari was cast as a featured player on Saturday Night Live’s forty-seventh season, alongside fellow newcomers James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman. He was the show’s first Middle Eastern male and the second cast member of Iranian heritage in its history. Athari was a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live during its 47th season between 2021 and 2022.
