Anthony Whyte Career

Whyte’s stories revolve around hip-hop culture figures. His debut novel, Ghetto Falsehoods, was released by!st Books Library in 2001. Shortly after its publication, Whyte realized that his marketing vision differed significantly from that of his publishers, so he chose to go solo. As a result, he formed Augustus Publishing with Jason Claiborne as President. Whyte reissued Ghetto Falsehoods as Ghetto Girls in 2002 and instantly made it to the Essence Magazine Best Seller List. His Ghetto Girls Series follows four young women who attend NYC high schools and are exceptional singers and dancers. Two of the girls come from upper-class families, while one is from the ghetto.

Whyte cites Chester Himes, Iceberg Slim, and Shakespeare as influences. Hip-hop literature, formerly known as street lit, is a genre of writing that focuses on the gritty realities of city life. Hip-hop literature is becoming increasingly popular, with several novels authored by young black authors now available on the market. While some started in prison, not all authors or publishers specialize on prison writing. Whyte is unique as an author in that he not only writes and publishes his own work, but also promotes and publishes the works of new and upcoming hip-hop writers. He frequently edits the material himself, assisted by expert readers and other editors.

Augustus Publishing (“Where Hip Hop literature begins”) has recently published It Can Happen In A Minute by S. M. Johnson, Booty Call *69 by Erick S. Gray, The Blue Circle by Keisha Seignious, If it Ain’t One Thing It’s Another by Sharron Doyle, A Good Day to Die by James Hendricks, Woman’s Cry by Vanessa Martir, and Lipstick Diaries, an all-female anthology of ten emerging writers with a foreword by Crystal Lacey Winslow from Melodrama Publishing.
