Shankar gave her first public performance on February 27, 1995, the 75th birthday of her father. The performance took place in New Delhi’s Siri Fort. Zakir Hussain, a renowned tabla maestro, accompanied her. She also began accompanying her father in his concerts around the world the following year. Her first album, ‘Anoushka,’ was released in 1998, and her second album, ‘Anourag,’ was released in 2000. Her third album, ‘Live at Carnegie Hall,’ released in 2001, earned her a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album. She became the youngest person ever nominated for this award.
She decided to establish herself as a solo performer outside of her father’s ensemble after releasing three albums. She toured the world for the next few years, performing around fifty concerts per year. She performed at the ‘Concert for George,’ a posthumous tribute to the late singer and musician George Harrison, in 2002.
‘RISE,’ Anoushka’s fourth album, was released in 2005. It peaked at number two on the US World Albums Chart and number 29 on the US Top Heatseekers Albums Chart. It was also named one of Amazon.com’s Top 100 Editor’s Picks for the year. In 2007, she released the album ‘Breathing Under Water’ with Indian American musician Karsh Kale.
She signed with the record label Deutsche Grammophon in 2011, which proved to be a watershed moment in her career. Her following album, ‘Traveller,’ released the same year, earned her yet another Grammy Award nomination. It sold over 52,000 copies worldwide and received positive reviews from critics. ‘Traces of You,’ her seventh studio album, was released in 2013. It earned Anoushka her fourth ‘Grammy Award’ nomination for ‘Best World Album.’ Her subsequent albums, ‘Home’ and ‘Land of Gold,’ came out in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Shankar has also appeared on recordings by other well-known artists, including American singer and songwriter Lenny Kravitz and English musician and songwriter Gordon Matthew Thomas Summer, better known as Sting.
