Anne Fulwood News Flash
The June 1993 edition of Australian Penthouse Magazine was released on Friday, May 14, 1993. A cartoon was published on page 33 as part of its ongoing series of full-page caricatures of celebrities created by Frantz Kantor and known collectively as “Kantor’s Celebrity Skins.”
The caricature, titled “News Flash,” depicted an immaculately groomed, blonde female newsreader, clearly Anne Fulwood, sitting at her news desk, facing the camera, and completely naked from the waist down, her legs spread apart clearly displaying her pubic hair and vulva beneath the desk. The caption “Anne Fulwood” featured in huge print beneath the artwork. Fulwood threatened Penthouse and Kantor with a defamation suit as soon as she became aware of the situation.
The dispute was resolved out of court. Penthouse recalled and burned all unsold copies of the magazine, and publicly apologized to Fulwood for her unpleasant treatment and embarrassment. It also provided her all of Kantor’s original cartoon drawings, sketches, prints, and drafts.
Anne Fulwood Career
Fulwood began her television career in 1982 as a sports reporter for ADS-7 (now ADS-10) in Adelaide. In late 1984, she joined Seven National News as a co-news anchor, with renowned broadcaster Kevin Crease, well-known weatherman Keith Martyn, and former football player Peter Marker on sports. She went to Sydney in 1987, originally as a sports reporter for Network Ten. She was an Eyewitness News weekend news anchor as well as a reporter on Sydney with Mike Gibson. Fulwood began working as a newsreader for Good Morning Australia in 1991, with Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Tim Webster.
From 1991 (when she succeeded initial host Eric Walters) to 1995, Fulwood rose to national popularity as the anchor of Ten’s Late News. Fulwood returned to the Seven Network in late 1995, first as a late news presenter and later as a co-host on 11 AM, where she remained until the show’s final episode in May 1999. From mid-1999 until mid-2000, Fulwood co-hosted Seven News Melbourne with David Johnston. Fulwood’s stint at Seven ended with her hosting the Late News.
Fulwood worked briefly in the United States twice, once at KTVV-TV (now KXAN) in Austin, Texas. The first time was during a ‘news anchor exchange’ with Tonia Cooke. This was because Austin and Adelaide are sister cities celebrating their sesquicentennial. Fulwood was recruited back for a second time, this time as a co-anchor with Cooke. Fulwood, a strong tennis player, has covered various athletic events for Ten, including the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
