Anne Berner Political Views
Berner was elected to the Finnish Parliament as a nonpartisan candidate for the Centre Party of Finland in 2015. In May 2015, she was appointed to Sipilä’s administration as Minister of Transport and Communications. Her political ideas were influenced by classical liberalism, and she believed strongly in the need of entrepreneurship and responsible ownership. During her ministerial tenure, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, as well as the entire branch of government, were reorganized to accommodate changes in transportation and communications. One of her major political initiatives was the Transport Services Act, a sweeping legal reform governing the transportation industry market.
The Act has earned international recognition, including the GSMA Government Leadership Award in 2019. The Taxi Union of Finland has criticized the Act, which is the first of its sort in the world. In Sipilä’s government, Minister Berner was in charge of deregulation, the Postal Act, the Driving Licence Act, the Road Traffic Act, the Highways Act, the Private Roads Act, and the Vehicle Inspection Act. She also advocated for climate change action and pushed for Finland’s transportation industry to be carbon-free by 2045. She was an active participant in the FinEst Link program, which seeks to improve mobility between Helsinki and Tallinn.
Berner indicated in 2016 that she hoped that after 20 years, she will be recognized as someone who made far-reaching, courageous decisions that benefited Finland greatly. Berner was relieved of her ministerial duties on May 29, 2019, due to her appointment to the SEB Group board of directors beginning in June 2019. Anu Vehviläinen took her place.
