Harmon was a child model who won a Seventeen modeling contest in 1987. She was a member of the Highland Belles at Highland Park High School until 1990. Soon after, she won a Spectrum Model Search contest, went on to have a successful modeling career, and rose to prominence in the early 1990s. She walked the runways for Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, and Donna Karan, and she has graced the covers of ELLE, Cosmopolitan, and Esquire. She is represented by IMG Models in New York City. David Hasselhoff discovered Harmon on a plane in 1995 and he began acting. She went on to star in Baywatch Nights and the short-lived C-16: FBI. She also appeared in Lawn Dogs, a 1998 film.
Harmon rose to prominence in the late 1990s when she appeared on the NBC series Law & Order as ADA Abbie Carmichael from 1998 to 2001. During this time, she also played Barbara Gordon in the animated film Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, taking over for Stockard Channing. Harmon left Law & Order to pursue a career in film, stating that she preferred working in film to working on television. She had a supporting role in Agent Cody Banks (2003), playing the CIA handler of a teenage agent, after appearing in the 2001 direct-to-video film Good Advice (Frankie Muniz). Harmon co-starred in the direct-to-DVD political suspense drama End Game with Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Woods in 2006, and she played Rose in the critically acclaimed Western film Seraphim Falls.
Harmon appeared in the ABC pilot Secrets of a Small Town, which was not picked up for a series.She also appeared in another NBC flop, Inconceivable, which was canceled after two episodes. Harmon hosted an infomercial for “UpLiv,” a stress-management program, and also appeared in an Olay “Pro-X” wrinkle cream infomercial. She co-starred as Boston police detective Jane Rizzoli in the TNT crime drama series Rizzoli & Isles with Sasha Alexander from 2010 to 2016. The show debuted on July 12, 2010. She directed the 100th episode of the series. At the 2012 Gracie Allen Awards, Harmon won Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Drama Series for Rizzoli & Isles, and she also won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Actress in 2015.
Harmon appeared in Craig Morgan’s “This Ole Boy” music video, which was released in January 2012. Harmon revealed on Conan O’Brien’s late night show in July 2012, during promotions for a new season of Rizzoli and Isles, that she was a fan of and very interested in playing a movie version of the She-Hulk from Marvel Comics if such a movie became available. Harmon signed a multi-picture development deal with Lifetime in June 2021, where she will host the documentary series Cellmate Secrets and star as Hazel King in Buried in Barstow.
