Alberta, who was born in Hernando, Mississippi, missed sixth grade because she had to pick cotton and maintain five children while working four jobs. Her father, James Thomas McGlowan, was a professor, a United Methodist minister, a civil rights worker, and a community activist who served as the first principal of Hernando Central (now known as Oak Grove Central Elementary School) during segregation from 1958 to 1960; he died of cancer in 1982, when she was 12 years old. McGlowan began her government relations career working for Steve Wynn’s Mirage Resorts as the government and public affairs manager. During her time with Mirage Resorts, she was involved in lobbying efforts with the American Gaming Association (AGA), which created the groundwork for the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi. She also created advocacy and community outreach initiatives for Mirage Resorts in both Las Vegas and Biloxi.
McGlowan worked as the Director of Outreach for Senator Bob Dole’s Better America Foundation, which was dedicated to encouraging community development. She worked on issues of diversity, welfare reform, tax policy, and healthcare as a legislative/press aide for Representative Roscoe Bartlett (R-6th Dist. Maryland) and Representative John Ensign. She also worked as a publicist for Ensign’s 1996 re-election campaign.
McGlowan worked for Chairman Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation as director of government affairs and diversity development from 1999 until 2005. She was in charge of the Fox Entertainment Group’s and its owned and operated entities’ diversity initiatives formulation and implementation. She was also a News Corporation lobbyist and advocate in Congress for federal, legislative, and regulatory measures that supported the company’s goals.

McGlowan announced her congressional candidacy in Mississippi’s 1st congressional district in February 2010, challenging incumbent Democrat Travis Childers. She was one of 32 African-American Republicans running for Congress, the most since Reconstruction. She would have been only the third African American Republican elected to the House of Representatives in 75 years if she had been elected. Her political positions included an emphasis on better supporting education and a drive toward bipartisanship, as well as her belief that the country required immigration enforcement of existing laws rather than new immigration legislation. She also sought to balance the federal budget, enact small-business tax relief, and create jobs in north Mississippi.
She went on to lose the Republican primary after finishing in third place with 15% of the vote. She returned to Fox News in June 2010 after a brief hiatus. McGlowan currently works for Fox News and Fox Business Network as a political and business commentator and contributor, covering politics, special interest organizations, and lobbyists.
