Davis moved to New York in 1959 to broaden her educational horizons, enrolling in the Elizabeth Irwin High School in Greenwich Village. She was introduced to communism here, which made her think of racism and poverty. Here, she became increasingly interested in philosophy. She traveled to Europe in 1962 to participate in the Eighth World Festival for Youth and Students in Finland. She saw this as an opportunity to meet other revolutionary scholars at the festival. Davis was a philosophy assistant professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. She joined the Communist Party of the United States and the Black Panther Party.
The Board of Regents at UCLA repeatedly attempted to remove Davis from her position due to her affiliation with the Communist Party USA. Davis was fired from UCLA for using obscene language. Following this incident and the charges filed against her, Davis fled and was placed on the FBI’s most wanted criminals list. She was arrested in New York, but all charges against her were dropped after the trial. Davis returned to teaching at San Francisco State University despite being barred from teaching at large universities following her arrest. Davis worked as an African-American studies lecturer at Claremont College before moving on to teach women and ethnic studies at San Francisco University.
She was elected vice president of the Communist Party in 1980. In 1984, she was re-elected as the Communist Party’s vice president, and she wrote numerous books on activism. Her primary area of interest in social work was the state of prisoners in the United States. After objecting to the lack of women in the Million Man March in 1995, Davis founded the African American Agenda 2000 to unite Black Feminists. In 2003, she delivered a lecture at Agnes Scott College about the injustice of the death penalty and the need for prison reform. She began teaching a course called ‘History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She also delivered the commencement address at Grinnell College.
