Elson started out in the business as a young model and actor, with several print and commercial appearances. When she was a child, she also made appearances in a number of community theater plays in San Diego. At the age of 14, Elson appeared in a co-starring capacity on the CBS mystery-adventure series Whiz Kids, marking her television debut. Elson played Alice Tyler in the television series, where she costarred alongside Matthew Laborteaux, Todd Porter, and Jeffrey Jacquet as a trio of adolescent detectives who use talking computers to solve crimes and apprehend offenders. Despite the short lifespan of Whiz Kids, Elson’s portrayal of Alice made the fourteen-year-old and her adolescent co-stars notable figures in the numerous teen publications of the time.
Elson was cast as a co-star in the science-fiction situation comedy ALF on NBC in 1986. Elson played the role of Lynn Tanner in the television series, which followed the adolescent daughter of a typical suburban middle-class family as she adopted a friendly extraterrestrial played by puppeteer Paul Fusco. Before the show’s 1990 discontinuation, Elson’s performance won the young actress two nominations for Youth in Film Awards during its four-season run.
