Morton has spent the majority of her career in the Chicago theater scene. Clybourne Park, American Buffalo, Dublin Carol, The Pillowman, Love-Lies-Bleeding, and Awake and Sing are among the many stage productions in which she has appeared. Morton made her Broadway debut as Nurse Ratched in the Tony Award-winning 2001 revival of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, opposite Gary Sinise. She played Barbara in the original Chicago production as well as the original Broadway production of Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County. She was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for her performance. Morton returned to the role in the National Theatre’s Fall 2008 production. With the play Guards at the Taj, she made her Off-Broadway directing debut.
Morton has appeared in several films. She made her feature film debut as a supporting actress in Straight Talk, a 1992 comedy starring Dolly Parton. In 1993, she played the lead character’s mother in Rookie of the Year. The film was a box office success, grossing over $56 million globally. Her next film appearance was in Joel Schumacher’s 1999 crime thriller 8mm. Ten years later, Morton landed her breakthrough role as George Clooney’s character’s sister in Jason Reitman’s critically acclaimed drama film Up in the Air. She starred in the comedy-drama film The Dilemma in 2011 and the critically acclaimed independent film Bluebird in 2013.
Morton appeared as a guest star on Crime Story, The Equalizer, ER, Private Practice, and Homeland. In the Starz political drama Boss, she played Catherine Walsh, the Republican candidate for governor, from 2011 to 2012. She appeared as Erin Reagan’s new boss, Amanda Harris, on the CBS drama Blue Bloods from 2013 to 2014. Morton was cast as Sergeant Trudy Platt in the NBC dramas Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. in 2014. From the second season of Chicago P.D., Morton was promoted from recurring guest star to series regular.
