She was the country’s first African-American woman editor of a major mainstream publication. Barnett contributed to Fashion Planet, a website that later evolved into the publication Fashion Almanac, while she was a student at Columbia University. Barnett became the managing editor of Fashion Almanac after having first been interested in a career in the fashion sector. The experience also affected Barnett’s interest in journalism. Barnett worked as the lifestyle editor at Essence magazine after receiving her MFA, and in 2000 she became the editor-in-chief of Honey magazine. Her first role as editor-in-chief of a “mainstream consumer magazine[s]” was as managing editor of Teen People when she joined Time Inc. in 2003. After that, she joined Harper’s Bazaar as deputy editor, and in 2010 she was appointed editor-in-chief of Ebony.

While working for Ebony, Barnett managed the magazine’s first overhaul in its 66-year history. She served on the board of the American Society of Magazine Editors for three terms after being elected in 2011. Barnett was selected Target Market News’ Media Executive of the Year in 2012 and received eight Salute to Excellence Awards for her efforts there and at various editing jobs. Under the guidance of Jason Whitlock, she was appointed executive editor of The Undefeated, an ESPN sports and culture website that was then in development and aimed toward African-American viewers. Subsequently, Barnett became an executive vice president and chief content officer of TheGrio.Barnett then departed from TheGrio to become the general manager of BET Digital and senior vice president of BET.
