Alexa PenaVega is an American actress and singer most recognized for her roles as Carmen Cortez in the first four Spy Kids films and in Sleepover (2004). In 2009, she played Ruby Gallagher in the ABC Family sitcom Ruby & the Rockits.

Her father, Baruch Vega, is a Colombian fashion photographer and student informer for the Central Intelligence Agency, while her mother, Gina Rue, is a former model. Vega has six siblings, including the actress Makenzie Vega. She and her family relocated to California when she was four years old. As an adolescent, she was homeschooled.

On October 10, 2010, Vega married American film producer Sean Covel at a ceremony in his hometown of Lead, South Dakota. Robert Rodriguez escorted her down the aisle. Carmen, a cruel and abusive mother, struggles to babysit her brother Juni Cortez, who is secretly a spy. Carmen’s parents are kidnapped, and they learn their secret. Initially at odds, their connection improves after conversing with her uncle Machete, who has a sibling rivalry with Juni’s father, Gregorio. Carmen also emphasizes the importance of family unity and argues that any Cortezes participating in espionage should be held accountable. Ruby & the Rockits

In the fall of 2015, Vega appeared on the 21st season of Dancing with the Stars. Her husband, Carlos PenaVega, also competed in the season, however he and his partner were eliminated in Week 11. Vega was matched with Mark Ballas, a professional dancer. On November 9, Vega and Ballas were eliminated in Week 9 and finished sixth overall.

Sing

Vega recorded three songs for the soundtracks while playing Carmen Cortez in the Spy Kids movies. She released her debut single, “Isle of Dreams,” to help promote the release of the second film; “Game Over” and “Heart Drive,” with Bobby Edner, were released during the marketing of the third film. She recorded songs for the film Repo! The Genetic Opera, which was released in 2008.

Vega performed the song “Christmas is the Time to Say ‘I Love You'” in the ABC Family movie Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe. The song is on Walt Disney Records’ compilation album Songs to Celebrate 25 Days of Christmas, released on November 3, 2009. The music video for the song premiered on ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas. She performed many songs for her role in Ruby & The Rockits in 2009. Vega also contributed two songs to the soundtrack of the 2012 film The Devil’s Carnival.
