Adepero Oduye was born in Brooklyn, New York as one of seven children to Nigerian parents. After graduating from Cornell University with a pre-med degree, she pursued a career in acting.

Oduye’s breakthrough role came in 2011 when she appeared in Dee Rees’ highly acclaimed and award-winning independent film Pariah, for which she won multiple prizes and was nominated for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit prizes. During her Golden Globe winning speech for The Iron Lady, Meryl Streep cited some of her favorite performances from the year, including Oduye in Pariah. The next year, she joined an all-star cast in the Steel Magnolias television version, playing Annelle Dupuy-Desoto, a part originating by Daryl Hannah 7In 2013, Oduye costarred with Chiwetel Ejiofor in Steve McQueen’s historical drama 12 Years a Slave, which won the 2014 Academy Award for Best Picture. She made her directorial debut in 2014 with Breaking In, a short film about a young black man’s first encounter with the NYPD, which was inspired by her brother’s early experiences. The film has received numerous film festival recognition and prizes. Oduye made her Broadway debut with Cicely Tyson in Horton Foote’s The Trip To Bountiful. Oduye co-starred opposite Steve Carell in Adam McKay’s 2015 comedy-drama The Big Short, which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. In 2017, she appeared alongside Richard Gere in the drama thriller The Dinner. In 2018, she appeared in the movies Geostorm and Widows. In 2019, she portrayed activist Nomsa Brath in Ava DuVernay’s miniseries When They See Us.
