She directed the feature film The Secret Life of Bees, which was based on Sue Monk Kidd’s best-selling book. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Urbanworld Film Festival in October 2008 and was released by Fox Searchlight. Beyond the Lights, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, was directed by Prince-Bythewood in 2014. The film is inspired by Nina Simone’s song “Blackbird,” which appears on her album Nina Simone with Strings. The film’s core crew members, including costume designer Sandra Hernandez and production designer Cec, were all women.
