Only a decade before, she had narrowly escaped the devastating Liberian civil war. Rees worked as an intern for Spike Lee during her graduate studies, and she was able to get him to executive produce the picture. Receiving finance for the feature picture was tough, and the process took nearly five years to complete.

Mudbound is a period drama based on Hillary Jordan’s 2008 novel of the same name. It is set in the 1940s in the Mississippi Delta and chronicles the narrative of two families. In the summer of 2016, the film was shot in New Orleans over the course of 28 days. Rees used the names of their slave ancestors from her grandmother’s diaries to direct her research. She claims that by doing so, she was able to go deeper into her own personal history. Mudbound, which premiered at Sundance in 2017, became the festival’s most expensive buy, with Netflix paying $12.5 million for it.
