Ruilin’s parents were uneducated, but he eventually gained admission to university by spending hours by candlelight reading literature. Yang’s mom works as a gynecologist and obstetrician. In order for Ruilin to complete his doctorate in mining explosives, the pair relocated to Brisbane.

Bowen Yang Sexual Orientation – Partner

Yang’s father, who was 17, found out about his son’s homosexuality via an open chat window on the household computer. His parents were reluctant, thinking that things like this didn’t happen in China. Yang’s father, who is not religious, set up eight sessions of gay conversion therapy for him.

Bowen went to the therapy to please his parents, but he was scared by the counselor’s use of pseudoscientific logic mixed with religion to explain away affirmative signs of homosexuality. When Bowen asked why his parents didn’t notice the disconnect, they responded that it was a cultural value associated with being a man and upholding the family line.

In order for Yang to attend NYU, his father sent his older sister to accompany him to New York in 2008. He learned to embrace his gay identity, including it into his comedic persona, and hoped that his parents would also come to terms with that part of him. Since then, they have managed to call a truce and have a “great relationship.”

Alongside improviser Chloe Fineman, Yang was elevated to featured player for the 45th season in September 2019. After Terry Sweeney and John Milhiser, he is the third gay male cast member and the first Chinese-American cast member in the history of the program. He appeared in the cold open of the show as Kim Jong-un advising Trump on how to handle the crisis in Ukraine. He appeared as an extra in a mock Downton Abbey movie trailer and as Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang in other parodies.

As the newly appointed health minister for the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to WU.
