Her father is an architect and teacher, and her mother is a trade unionist who teaches elementary school in Hackney. Burrows went to Stoke Newington School in Stoke Newington after attending William Tyndale Primary School in Islington. Burrows debuted in a brief role in Jim Sheridan’s 1993 picture In the Name of the Father. In 1995, she landed her first noteworthy acting roles as a driven young Irishwoman in Ngozi Onwurah’s Welcome II The Terrordome and Circle of Friends. She had the lead role in the BBC adaptation of Hotel de Love and Karaoke by Dennis Potter in 1996. She appeared in Lovelife, Nevada, The Matchmaker, and Mike Figgis’ One Night Stand the next year.
She played Italian and English-raised twins in Figgis’ experimental 1999 film The Loss of Sexual Innocence. She also starred as the lead in Figgis’ Miss Julie film adaption and in the thriller Deep Blue Sea.
