Hawkey was born and raised in Ossining, NY. She is the youngest of five children born to Penelope “Penny” (née Sharp), an advertising executive who wrote the iconic Coca-Cola commercial “Hey Kid, Catch!” and William Stevenson “Bill” Hawkey, another advertising executive. Her parents currently own and operate Sundial Farm, a plant nursery near Ossining. Her four full brothers are Adam, a film compositor and colorist, Robin, a chiropractor, Renn, a musician and film producer, and Timothy, a marketing managing director. Hawkey also has two paternal half-siblings from her father’s previous marriage: William, the headmaster at The Pennington School, and Elisabeth, a corporate cook.

Hawkey made her acting debut in 2004 with a small role in the short film Hard-bite. She played the lead role of Lacey Wilcox in the horror film Brain Blockers, released in March 2007. She later had a small role as Molly in the film Higher Ground, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The film was directed by her sister Vera Farmiga and produced by her brother Ryan Hawkey. She voiced Orro Oxslayer in the 2012 fantasy video game Guild Wars 2. In 2013, Hawkey created the web series Holy Singles, in which she played Sevany Martin, a lovesick woman who hosts a weekly Christian singles meeting in her backyard. The first episode was entirely improvised by Hawkey. In 2015, she began starring in and producing the comedy web series “F’d,” for which she was nominated for Best Comedy Actress at the Los Angeles Web Series Festival. Both videos are distributed online by Funny or Die. In 2016, Hawkey came to public attention when she began hosting an episode of ABC’s dating reality game show The Bachelor. “I was watching Chris Soules’ season of The Bachelor and I thought, ‘Oh my God! I need to cut myself for next season!'” They’re shows that make me happy, so I just know that I need to develop the metaphors that make me the happiest.

She appeared as herself in the film Pistol Shrimp, which tells the story of a women’s basketball team of which she is a founding member. The film premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Later, Hawkey appeared as an interviewer in the film “Tiger Hunter” (2016). She later played the role of Carla Wendos, who impersonated keyboardist Wendy Carlos, in the Adult Swim parody show Live at the Necropolis: The Lords of Synth. Hawkey later played the role of Shelly Warren in the short film Vape. As a photographer, Hawkey has photographed celebrities such as Tim Meadows, Lauren Lapkus, Vera Farmiga, Taissa Farmiga, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jeff Perry. She worked as a stills photographer on the film “In the Heights”. In May 2018, Hawkey launched Spermcast, a music podcast designed to help people find sperm donors. Spermcast was launched by the Earios network as one of its main services.
