Shepard was born in the suburban Detroit community of Ypsilanti, Michigan, at Beyer Hospital in Washtenaw County. He is the son of David Robert “Dave” Shepard Sr., an automobile salesperson, and Laura LaBo, an employee of General Motors (GM). When he was three years old, his parents separated. At the age of 7, Shepard experienced sexual abuse, which he believes had a significant contributing factor to his subsequent substance usage problems. It took him twelve years to tell anybody about the abuse.
When Shepard reached high school, his mother had built a sizable business. Shepard claimed that his mother had given him the name Dax after the wealthy playboy Dax (Diogenes Alejandro Xenos) from Harold Robbins’ book The Adventurers. He has a younger half-sister named Carly Hatter, who he cast in two movies, Hit and Run (2012) and CHiPs (2017), and an older brother named David Shepard Jr. who resides in Oregon. Shepard appeared as Michael “Mike” Levine-Young, a former music journalist from New York. He is married to Rio in the American single-camera sitcom Bless This Mess. Mike and Rio, a young couple, relocate from their New York home to a farm in Bucksnort, Nebraska, which Mike’s great-aunt left for them. They discover an elderly guy named Rudy Longfellow living there, who is severely neglected. He plays Crosby Braverman, one of the primary characters on the NBC series Parenthood. Jabbar and Aida’s father, Crosby Braverman, is also Jasmine Trussell-Braverman’s spouse. In addition, he is the brother of Adam, Sarah, and Julia and the third child of Zeek and Camille Braverman. As a recording engineer, Crosby eventually teams up with his elder brother Adam to launch The Luncheonette, a prosperous recording studio.

Shepard role on The Ranch
In the Netflix Original comedic series The Ranch, he plays Luke Matthews. A recurrent character on Netflix Original’s sitcom series The Ranch is named Luke Matthews. He is Rooster and Colt Bennett’s cousin as well as Beau Bennett’s nephew.
Luke shares many traits with his cousins Colt and Rooster, including a fondness for consuming alcohol, pursuing women, and acting like a child. Because of his military training, he has a strong mechanical bent and enjoys working on vehicles and other machinery.
