Gibbs Childhood, Family – Education
Margaret Bradley gave birth to Marla Gibbs at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Raised in the south side neighborhood of the city, Bronzeville, Gibbs was the middle of three sisters. Her father, Douglas Bradley of Waterproof, Louisiana (d. 1947), was an ice firm owner and a self-taught mechanic of Creole descent.
Ophelia Birdie, her mother, was a Haitian-American businesswoman who occasionally ran numbers in the gambling industry. Gibbs’s parents separated in 1936. Her mother moved to Detroit after getting married to Charles Cady. Gibbs and her siblings continued to live with their father, Hattie Sims, and grandmother in Chicago.
Before going to Wendell Phillips Academy High School, Gibbs attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and St. Elizabeth High School. Her mother and stepfather resided in Detroit with her after her father passed away when she was sixteen. In her junior year, she spent a semester at Northern High School. Her graduation from Phillips in 1949 followed her return to Chicago, where she reenrolled. She afterwards made her way back to Detroit, Michigan, and enrolled at Peters Business School.

Olivia informed Paulina of her suspicions, and Paulina acknowledged that she had informed Marlena because it should have been covered by patient confidentiality laws.
