Bearse grew up in Winter Park, Fla. After she graduated from Winter Park High School in 1976, her family relocated to Atlanta. She attended Rollins College, Birmingham Southern College, and Young Harris College, where she earned an associate of arts degree. Bearse studied acting with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City.

Bales made her television debut in 1982–83 on the ABC daytime soap opera All My Children, playing Amanda Cousins. She had a small role in “Accord” and then a role in “Sex”. In 1985, Bales played the female lead in the supernatural horror film “Fright Night”. She returned to television in 1986 with a guest role on ABC’s “Hotel (West). The series ran until 1997, making it one of the longest-running shows in television history.

Bearse studied directing at the American Film Institute and the University of Southern California. He began his television acting career with a role in the series Married With Children, for which he directed 31 episodes from 1991 to 1997. He also directed “Reba”, “Mad TV”, “Nick Freno”, “Malcolm & Eddie”, “Pauly” and “Pauly”. The Tom Show,” “The Jamie Foxx Show,” “Dama and Greg,” “Veronica’s Closet,” “Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place,” “Jesse” and other episodes of Marrying… With Child, Jessie (2011) and The Woman opposite Christina Applegate. In 2005, Bearse directed the NBC pilot “Sperm Donor,” starring Maggie Wheeler. In 2006, Bearse teamed with Rosie O’Donnell to create and executive produce The Big Gay Sketch Show, which premiered on Logo on April 24, 2007.

Bearse appeared in only two films as an actor during the 1990s: The Last Generation and The Munsters (both 1995). She returned to acting in 2011 with a lead role in two episodes of the Lifetime comedy series Drop Dead Diva. In 2020, she starred in the German comedy horror film “Sky Shark”, her first big-screen release in 25 years. In 2022, Bales played Luke MacFarlane’s mother in the romantic comedy Brothers.
