While in Oklahoma, he first met future co-host of The Read, Kid Fury, on Twitter and later met in person during a trip to Atlanta in 2012. West soon moved to New York City, where he first worked at a newspaper and then as an executive assistant. Two months after West moved to New York, Kid Fury approached him about starting a podcast with the Loudpeaks Network. The show, called “The Read”, quickly gained traction. iTunes named The Reader a Best Podcast of 2013 and was a 2014 Editor’s Choice winner. The Reader was included on its list of podcasts you “must listen to.”The Reader also won the 2014 Black Blog Award for Best Podcast. West was named to The Grio’s 100 alongside Kid Fury, who said: “The incredible duo takes ‘throwing shade’ to the next level every week and continues to grow their fans beyond their TV show on Fuse TV, which premiered in October 2019.

West is known for his criticism of racism. In 2015, he came to the country for a “Funny or Racist” panel hosted by WNYC, where he dismissed arguments against blackface. West is also a stand-up comedian, most notably “telling the gory humor” on Comedy Central’s Drunk History series opposite Octavia Spencer. Salon called the episode 2015’s “best moment in political comedy.” Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson for their roles in the Stonewall Riots. The A.V. Club said the episode “taught Hollywood a lesson in how to tell LGBT stories” and added, “West, one of the best of the season, returns with another unforgettable, powerful charm.”

West is also the host of Beats 1 Radio on Apple Music, and writes for Essence. The black woman told him, “One of the people we need is our friends. That’s sweet.” West appeared on the second season of MTV2’s late-night show Uncommon Sense with Charlamagne Tha God. West co-hosts “InsecuriTEA: Insecure Aftershow,” a podcast commentary on the HBO series “Insecure,” with Francheska Medina. Season 4 was nominated for a Social Good Shorty Award in the Podcast category at the 13th Annual Shorty Awards. Season five won the People’s Voice award at the Webby Awards.
