Akilah Hughes is an American comedian, writer, YouTuber, podcaster, and actress. She formerly worked as a digital correspondent for MTV, HBO, Fusion TV, and Comedy Central. She began her career with a YouTube channel called “It’s Akilah, Obviously!”

On December 2, 2013, Hughes released a comedy video called “Dating Your First Black Boyfriend”, in which she answered a hypothetical question from a white male friend, which quickly went viral. She gained recognition again after her video “The Intersection of Feminism and Pizza” went viral after it was released on April 8, 2015. The petition, titled “Ask Advertisers Not to Support BuzzFeed Video’s Creative Theft”, aims to persuade advertisers to stop supporting BuzzFeed Video. The petition, described as a viral petition by the Washington Post,[11] argues that “BuzzFeed has once again been caught stealing the ideas, jokes, and pranks of famous YouTube creators”. In 2017, Hughes filed a lawsuit against the video. In August 2020, a judge ruled that Benjamin’s video was fair use, dismissed the lawsuit in a judgment, and ordered Benjamin to pay $38,785.35 in attorney fees and $126.54 in court costs, arguing that Hughes had filed a frivolous and offensive lawsuit.

On April 2020, Comedy Central’s YouTube channel released three sketches starring Hughes and Milana Vayntrub as part of a new sketch series called “Having Fun with Akilah and Milana.” Hughes began appearing online in 2014 and made his debut in two episodes of mental_floss: The Report. Between 2014 and 2017, she made several appearances as her own online series, including Vlogbrothers in 2015 and Project for Awesome for Food.com in 2016 for the Scripps Network. Her television debut came during the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, when HBO aired four episodes of Crooked Media’s Pod Save America, which Hughes hosted. The book, a collection of memoirs titled Stories from My Time, was published by Razorbill, an imprint of Penguin Random House, on September 24, 2019. In 2023, Hughes wrote a script for Steven Soderbergh’s science fiction series Command Z, inspired by Kurt Anderson’s 2020 book Evil Genius: The Undoing of America. In 2016, Hughes attended the 2016 Brown and Black Democratic Presidential Conference on Fusion TV with Jorge Ramos, Rembert Brown, and Alicia Menendez. Politicians involved in the event included Democratic candidates for the 2016 US presidential election Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O’Malley.

Beginning in 2019, Hughes co-hosted Crooked Media’s new daily news podcast “What’s On Today” with political reporter Gideon Resnick.
