The Farrell clan is a notorious mining tribe that lives in seclusion on Shay Mountain in Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains. After ten years, Asa Farrell arrives to the mountain, and his cousin Lady Ray Farrell declares she will hand over authority to her son, Big Foster. Big Foster is kept in a cage until he is released because he will never be able to forgive Asa for leaving.

The mining firm intends to evict the Farrell family, but Deputy Sheriff Wade Houghton—a victim of PTSD, alcoholism, and opiate addiction—warns his superiors that the procedure would be violent and hazardous. Actor Michael Morse was first hesitant to play the character because it was meant to be a “toe-to-toe” rival to House.
