In 2004, Mason Sr., Mason’s father, pays a visit to Houston after Olivia relocates there to attend the University of Houston. Mason makes friends with Nicole, and he and Samantha form a strong bond with their father, Bill Welbrock. As they get closer over video games and a camping trip, Mason starts to show more interest in women.
Due to his drunkenness, Bill starts acting violently and abusively against Olivia and the kids in 2007. Whereas Mason and Samantha remain with their father, Olivia files for divorce.
