Wiseman Family – Education
Wiseman has three older brothers and is the youngest daughter of Dorothy and Kevin Wiseman. She was raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Milford, Pennsylvania. Wiseman participated in the high school outreach program of the DC Shakespeare Theatre. After completing her studies at Quince Orchard High School in 2003, she went on to Boston University to obtain a BFA in Theatre Arts. From 2011 to 2015, she studied at the Drama Division of Juilliard School, where one of her students was Mary Chieffo, who would later be cast member of Star Trek: Discovery.
Wiseman Partner
Wiseman started dating Noah Averbach-Katz, an actor, in 2013. The two were classmates at Juilliard School. The pair tied the knot on February 16, 2019. Their divorce was filed for in March of 2023. October 2023 marked the finalization of the divorce. Wiseman describes himself as gay.
Wiseman Star Trek: Discovery
She appeared as Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery. Midway through the 23rd century, a driven female Human Starfleet officer named Sylvia Tilly existed. In 2256, she was a cadet serving on the USS Discovery when she was commissioned as an ensign. Following her journey to the 32nd century, Tilly was hired as a teacher at Starfleet Academy. She stayed in this role for many years, eventually rising to the rank of longest-serving instructor at the school. Since she considered herself to be the best theoretical engineer at the Academy, she was given special treatment and given the opportunity to serve as an engineer on the Discovery. Since Tilly had “special needs” and was allergic to polyester and viscoelastic polyurethane foam, which made her snore, she was first given her own quarters.
When Tilly first met Michael Burnham, a prisoner who was temporarily sent to live with her, she expressed her excitement at the prospect of having a roommate by saying, “A roommate is like an automatic, built-in friend.” Though Burnham initially rejected Tilly’s offer of friendship and then accepted it in engineering, Tilly eventually came to respect Burnham’s bravery. Tilly confided in Burnham about her long-held desire of becoming a starship captain one day, despite her lack of confidence at the time. Admiring Tilly’s optimism, Burnham took her under her wing and they frequently trained each other physically and nutritionally.
In their quarters, Tilly had a picture of herself and Burnham next to their Starfleet Medal of Honor. Not being able to go home, she later offered to go into the future with Burnham in Discovery.

In 2022, Wiseman was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award in the category of Outstanding Lead Performer in a Play for her portrayal of Carlo in the Off-Broadway play At The Wedding. It was revealed in February 2023 that Mary has been chosen to play White House executive chef Marvella in the upcoming Shondaland series The Residence. Wiseman will return to the role of Sylvia Tilly in the next Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series, it was announced at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.
