He has appeared on every major concert stage in the country and has over 350 television appearances, including numerous on The Tonight Show and The Late Show With David Letterman. He was one of six comedians, including Jay Leno, who featured in the first HBO Comedy Special, as well as a series of Steve Martin specials.

Deer has performed on many major concert stages in the United States and made more than 350 television appearances, including The Night Show Starring Johnny Carson, whom he met early in his career, and the Late Show with David Letterman. He was one of six comedians to star alongside Jay Leno in the original HBO comedy “Freddie Prinze and Friends” and served as NBC’s Don Kirshner Rock Concert Host for four years and was a regular guest on Make Me Laugh. He has made more than 100 appearances on the Nashville Network, including two years as the host of Hee Haw. He appeared in films such as “Annie Hall”, “All the Fires” and “Tilt”. He was featured on the DVDs “The Comedy Classics of Jeff Foxworthy” and “The World’s Greatest Stand Up Collection” hosted by Norm Crosby. There is also a Gary Mule Deer Live CD featuring his performances and music. Gary is one of the most popular comedians on Sirius and XM Satellite Radio’s Clean Comedy channel.
After being a member of the Epic Records band The Back Porch Most, RCA Victor’s The New Society, and Paramount Records’ Bandanna in the 1960s, he produced the films The Muledeer and Moondog Medicine Show with Denny Flannigan in the early 1970s. They became stars of CBS’s The John Byner Comedy Hour, ABC’s Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour and NBC’s Madhouse 90. They have been regular guests on Madhouse 90 With David Frost, as well as Midnight Special and The Concert. They also toured for six years, performing in theaters, Playboy clubs and universities. They opened for many rock bands, including The Doobie Brothers, Sly and the Rock Family, The Who Brothers and Boz Scaggs.
