He began working as a comedian in the 1980s, appearing in films such as Big Top Pee-wee (1988) and I, Crazy (1989). In the 1990s, Hodge made her television acting debut on the short-lived CBS series Sugar and Spice. She later starred in the comedy variety show My Stand-Up Show, opposite Cynthia Stevenson. In 1991, she released her special, “Stephanie Hodge: Straight Talk.” In 1991, Hodge starred in NBC’s Nurse, a spin-off of The Golden Girls. The show was created with Hodge’s co-star Susan Harris, but later became busier. She left the show in 1993 after two seasons. The following year, he starred in the CBS comedy series “Butterball” as an ex-con trying to turn his life around. The show received negative reviews and was canceled after one season.

In 1995, she began starring opposite Geoff Pierson in the WB comedy series Unhappily Ever After. The series was originally supposed to star Hodge, whose character Jenny was the focus of the first few episodes. The series idea was later reworked. In the show’s third season, Nikki Cox became a breakout character. The producers attempted to eliminate Jenny’s bad behavior and return her to being a ghost. The audience’s negative reaction caused them to quickly withdraw. The character was revived in a deliberately awkward manner, with a network executive walking onto the set and announcing that he was no longer dead. However, Hodge decided to leave the series in 1998 following Jenny’s bizarre revelation, leaving his family for a gay woman and was never seen again. Unhappily Ever After, Hodge starred in the 2001 science fiction film Evolution. Over the next few years, he appeared in many sitcoms, including Reba, Life of Zack & Cody, Civil War, Dogs with Blogs, and various episodes of Funny or Die.
