Hunter was born and raised in Albany, Georgia, the youngest of nine. His mother died in 2004. He undertook an acting internship in Jackson, Mississippi, at age 20.
Reginald D. Hunter Career
Hunter first came to England at the age of 27 as a summer student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and became an audience member after her first performance in a competition show for which she paid £100. She turned her attention from acting to stand-up comedy, thinking it was comedy and could be profitable. Hunter attended Project X Presents events in 2006 and 2008.
Hunter frequently uses variations of the word “nigger” in his program titles. In 2006, “Reginald D. Hunt: Pride and Prejudice… and the Negro” caused controversy and the poster was banned on the London Underground. His tour with Steve Hughes was called Trophy Nigga and he performed at 55 venues in the UK, although not all used the tour name. Hunt joked that this was because fans didn’t like the word “trophy”.
Hunt performed at the Footballers’ Association in April 2013. Following the incident, PFA president Clark Carlisle accused Hunt of racism after using the word “nigger” during the match. Carlisle also said some people now find Hunter’s content “very offensive.” In response, Hunter posted several photos he took of tourists after the show, most of them smiling, on his Facebook page.
The Guardian is a member of Edinburgh’s E4 Laughs podcast, sharing the best of wisdom from the 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It also appeared on Midweek (BBC Radio 4) on 15 November 2011. In 2006, he won the Writer’s Guild of America Comedy Award for the series “Pride and Prejudice…and Niggers.”
