Career

After graduating from Penn State, Chasnoff reluctantly tried to work in theater in New York City, then entered Israel and joined the Israel Defense Forces at age 24. From 1997 to 1998, he served as a tank gunner in the 188th Armored Brigade in Southern Lebanon. Its mission is to protect northern Israel, including the Golan Heights and the Syrian border. His service included two months of training, two months of training at a tank school, three months of combat training, and then he served in southern Lebanon, where he participated in the anti-Hezbollah campaign. 8 [9] During this operation, Chasnov refused to kill two enemy fighters in an open field of fire, causing heavy casualties. Chasnoff was cleared of suspicion after the investigation determined that the soldiers were in fact Dutch UN soldiers who entered the open fire area.

While in the army, Chasnov tried to marry his Israeli girlfriend, but learned that Israeli rabbis did not consider him a kosher Jew and therefore he could not marry in the Jewish state. After leaving the IDF, Chasnoff continued to pursue recreational pursuits, first at the Improv Olympics in Chicago and most recently in New York. He currently has stage and screen credits in eight countries, including the United States, Israel, Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. He did warm-up work for Jon Stewart and Lewis Black, who entertained U.S. Marines on The Daily Show and on the U.S. Marine Corps’ Far East Comedy Tour. He has performed at more than 1,000 theater organizations, universities, festivals, and Jewish communities in North America, Israel, and Europe. His films, both stand-up and scripted, are based on unflinching observations about the nuances of American life and Jewish upbringing. On February 9, 2010, Simon & Schuster published Chasnoff’s humorous memoirs about his time in the Israel Defense Forces. It reached number 1 in August 2010. #3 on the Denver Post’s bestseller list.
