Legion

Smart portrays Melanie Bird. Dr. Melanie Bird is the human leader of Summerland and the wife of Oliver Bird. She teaches mutants how to harness their powers and protects them from Division 3. Following the events at Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital, Kerry, Ptonomy Wallace, and Melanie went in search of David Haller, the mutant responsible. The group returned to Summerland with what they believed to be David Haller, but they quickly realized that it was actually a mutant called Sydney Barrett with the ability to change bodies.

Melanie assigned Kerry and Ptonomy to find David and bring him to Summerland before Division 3 discovered him. However, David was able to elude them and was eventually taken by Division 3. Melanie planned a rescue operation where Syd, Ptonomy, Kerry, Rudy, and other mutants would save David since she knew that Division 3 held him. They met up with Melanie again on a beach close to the government building after that. After introducing herself, Melanie asks David to stand by her side, and he agrees.

Watchmen

She portrays Laurie Blake in HBO’s Watchmen. Laurel Jane “Laurie” Juspeczyk is a former masked vigilante who assumed the identity of Silk Spectre II after Sally Jupiter, her mother, and the original Silk Spectre retired.

Sally Jupiter departs California and relocates with Laurie to New York City, just in time for Laurie’s debut as the Crimebusters’ youngest member. Laurie meets Captain Metropolis and Doctor Manhattan, which irritates his companion, Janey Slater. Laurie subsequently meets the Comedian, who compliments her on being the spitting image of her mother. Following the meeting, Laurie feels terrible for the Comedian but never forgives him. Sally finally comes to terms with her relationship with the Comedian, even defending him against Laurie’s disparaging remarks following his murder.

Laurie becomes connected with Jon Osterman, also known as Doctor Manhattan, and collaborates with him on domestic operations. Her mother, on the other hand, disapproves of her relationship with Manhattan, equating it to sleeping with a nuclear weapon. On Laurie’s 20th birthday, they move into their own apartment in Washington.

Laurie read Hollis Mason’s biography Under The Hood, which detailed Blake’s sexual assault of her mother during their time in the Minutemen. In 1975, she meets and plays with Adrian Veidt’s genetically produced lynx, Bubastis, on his Antarctica estate.
