Brown Sugar

In Brown Sugar, Famuyiwa once again used a predominantly African American cast (some of the actors also played roles in The Wood). Lifelong friends Dre, played by Taye Diggs, and Sidney, played by Sanaa Lathan, cross paths, and despite each having their own responsibilities and obligations to their significant others, they eventually discover that their feelings for one another go beyond platonic friendship. Hip-hop music plays an important role in the film since Dre and Sidney are bonded by their love of the genre and the community that surrounds it.

Brown Sugar was published on October 11, 2002. Fox Searchlight Pictures heavily promoted the film, which grossed $10 million in its first weekend and a total of over $28 million nationwide.

The Wood

Famuyiwa’s semi-autobiographical first feature film, The Wood, tells the story of his childhood in Inglewood, California. While working at the Beverly Hills Niketown, Famuyiwa wrote and directed the film, which is a reflection of his experiences with his family and friends. At the Sundance Director’s Lab, he refined the script, starring Taye Diggs and Omar Epps in pivotal parts.

The movie follows the protagonists as they attempt to reawaken Diggs’s character from his drunken stupor. MTV Films created the film, titled The Wood—a loving acronym for their hometown—which debuted on July 16, 1999. Since MTV Films aimed to create a picture with a largely African-American cast, Famuyiwa gives them credit for the best plot and music. With an estimated $6 million in production costs, The Wood made over $25 million in box office revenue in the US alone.

The Flash

Famuyiwa was revealed as The Flash’s director in June 2016 following Seth Grahame-Smith’s departure from the film. Famuyiwa quit the project in October of 2016. He has been working on the project since June, including supervising the casting of Billy Crudup and Kiersey Clemons in pivotal roles. In his place, Andy Muschietti took over. In 2023, the movie was released.

Our Family Wedding

The film Our Family Wedding, which was directed by Famuyiwa, explores Barack Obama’s potential as the first African American president as well as the changing times. Starring Forest Whitaker, America Ferrera, Carlos Mencia, and Lance Gross, the movie deviates from conventional wedding films, which frequently have white people and white clothing.

The plot centers on Ferrera and Gross, two college students who decide to be married and have to tell their loved ones. According to Famuyiwa, wedding movies frequently highlight individual differences rather than sufficiently addressing the cultural distinctions between African Americans and Latinos. In its first weekend, the movie brought in around $8 million, and it brought in $20 million total across the country.
