Gill began her recording career in 1982, at the age of 16, when her childhood friend Stacy Lattisaw convinced her to record a show. The demo fell into the hands of the head of Atlantic Records, whose self-titled debut album was released shortly after on Cotillion Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. Gill later collaborated with Stacey on the duet album Perfect Combination. His second solo album, Chemistry, was released on Cotillion Records in 1985.
