Roscoe Carroll is an American actor and filmmaker. He is best known for his role as Joey Emerson on Fox’s comedy-drama Roc (1991-94).

Carroll graduated from Cincinnati’s renowned School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), which is part of the Cincinnati Public School District, in 1981. Determined to expand his acting abilities, he attended Webster University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts in St. Louis, where he earned a B.F.A. Carroll was later awarded an honorary degree from his alma mater in 2009.

Career
As part of Joe Papp’s acclaimed New York Shakespeare Festival, Carroll helped open the door to actors of color by playing nontraditional roles for black actors in Shakespeare’s film. In 1987, Carroll came across the work of August Wilson. The immensely talented young actor was chosen to play the role in the Broadway production of Wilson’s compelling story “The Piano Lesson.” The play not only won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but Carroll also received Tony and Drama Desk nominations.He is best known for his role as dead musician Joey Emerson on the Fox comedy-drama series Roc. He also played Dr. Keith Wilkes on the TV series “Chicago Hope.”Carroll has also made guest appearances on many television shows, including The Secret Service, Boston Law, Family Law, The West Side, Law & Order, The Game, ER, and Physician Assistant Gray.
Carroll has appeared in many Hollywood films, including “Born in April”, “Beauty”, “Red Tide”, “White Hype”, “Prelude to a Kiss”, “The Chase” and “The Know-It-“. All.” and “Yes No.” Carroll is reprising his recurring role as assistant director Leon Vance on the fifth season of the CBS drama NCIS, during which he reunites with Chicago Hope cast members Mark Harmon and Lauren Hawley. NCIS Director Jenny Shepherd ( After her death, her character becomes the new director of NCIS and replaces Holly in the main role. He also made a guest appearance as Vance on the NCIS spin-offs Los Angeles and New Orleans. He shares a birthday with his former NCIS co-star Michael Weatherly. In addition to being a regular on NCIS, Carroll directed 15 episodes of NCIS and made her acting debut in Season 12’s “We Build, We Fight.”
