Career
Stafford began his career as a reporter and anchor at KBJR-TV in Duluth, Minnesota, and WFRV-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He later became a morning anchor and reporter at WFTV-TV in Orlando, Florida. While at WFTV, Stafford founded the station’s search engine and launched a two-year investigation into hotel security in Orlando, Disney World’s popular tourist destination. Stafford’s work exposed major crimes to audiences and eventually led to a major investigation. In September 1992, Stafford joined WBBM-TV in Chicago as a reporter. During his four years at the station, he also served as a presenter for a time.
Stafford left WBBM in 1996 to join NBC’s Dateline NBC news network, where he worked as a Chicago news anchor for nearly 11 years. In 2006, he was removed from Dateline by NBC due to budget cuts. On September 23, 2007, Stafford joined WMAQ-TV/NBC5 Chicago as a weekend anchor and reporter. “I wanted the job and I wanted it,” Stafford told the Chicago Sun-Times after being hired by WMAQ. In July 2009, he moved to the anchor position and was hosted at the station at 17.00, 18.00 and 22.00. media reports. He retired on December 23, 2022. He also received the Edward R. Murrow Award in 2000 for his research on racial discrimination.
