Career

Having covered the World Championship Chicago Bulls in each of the team’s six championship seasons, Kelley was largely considered as one of the region’s best sports anchors and directors throughout his eight years in Chicago. Kelley anchored “Sports Sunday,” WMAQ-TV’s top-rated half-hour sports highlights program, in addition to his regular sportscasts. Among the city’s most vibrant sports and entertainment figures, he shared the anchor desk alongside NBA star Dennis Rodman and “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno. In April 1991, Kelley started working as a weekend anchor and sports reporter for WMAQ-TV. Kelley was a member of a sports team at WMAQ-TV that won major honors like the Chicago/Midwest Emmy award for producing and anchoring.

In his early years in broadcasting, Kelley worked as a news reporter at KMTV-TV in Omaha, Nebraska, and as a sports reporter and weekend sports anchor at WDAF-TV, Channel 4, the Fox affiliate in Kansas City, Missouri. At KTIV-TV in Sioux City, Iowa, he started his career as a reporter and weekend sports anchor. Kelley was the principal anchor of the weekly show “Baseball Today” and the primary host of “The National Sports Report” on the Fox Sports Network. In addition to co-hosting “Extra’s” hour-long weekend version, Kelley served as the program’s chief correspondent from 2001 to 2007.It was revealed on July 8, 2011, that Kelley would be joining the San Francisco NBC station to co-anchor the morning show.

On Oscar Sunday, Kelley co-hosted ABC’s “All-Star Tribute to Movies” and “Holiday with the Stars”. His varied broadcasting career has covered news, sports, and entertainment for more than 15 years. He served as the host of the summer 2008 version of the Anderson Cooper and Ahmad Rashad-hosted reality TV program The Mole. After leaving San Francisco in November 2013, Kelley moved back to Chicago to co-anchor Good Day Chicago on the FOX-owned station. Together with media tycoon Byron Allen, Kelley joined Allen’s Entertainment Studios in June 2016. On a number of Allen’s television projects, notably the return of the late 1960s game show Funny You Should Ask, Kelley takes on the roles of host and producer.

Kelley takes on a role with Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures, working with Freestyle Releasing, acquired by Allen in 2015. Kelley also produces content for Entertainment Studios’ video news platform, TheGrio.com. Kelley is the co-author of the book “Breaking Into Broadcasting,” a guide to landing one’s first (or next) on-air job in television.
