Career

From 1992 to 1999, Hernandez worked as a reporter for WDAF-TV in Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to that, he was a reporter for KFDA-TV in Amarillo, Texas. Hernandez worked as a general assignment reporter for WEWS-TV in Cleveland from 1999 to January 2002, after which he joined WBBM-TV in Chicago. Hernandez left the station in April 2004 to spend four months trekking across Mexico and Central America. After his travels, Hernandez returned to Kansas City in late 2004 to work for KSHB-TV.Hernandez departed KSHB in August 2012 to work as a marketer at the Unicorn Theatre in Kansas City.

Hernandez left from the Unicorn Theatre in 2013 to become communications director at City Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. In 2022, Hernandez was removed from the senior communications position at City Hall after claiming that Kansas City’s city manager, Brian Platt, proposed lying to the media. Hernandez, who remained a city employee as a special liaison in the Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity department, sued the city in December 2022 for job discrimination. Kansas City’s attorneys responded to the complaint in January 2023, requesting the judge to dismiss the case and stating in their motion that regardless of if the city manager lied, there is no “law, rule, or regulation” that prohibits lying to the media.
