Gardner became captain of her school’s cheerleading squad during her sophomore year. Gardner elected to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a cheerleader and a Zeta Tau Alpha sister, studying journalism.

Gardner has made several media appearances throughout the world as a speaker, celebrity judge, and stunt teacher. Between Worlds 2009 and 2010, Gardner was picked as Inside Cheerleading Magazine’s December cover girl, and she was also the magazine’s most featured cheerleader, as proven by giant banners with her face at booths across the country. In 2011, CNN followed Cheer Extreme’s level five Large Senior All-Girl team Senior Elite as they prepared for Worlds 2011, which included Gardner and the rest of her team. Gardner launched a collection of sweat-proof cheerleading cosmetic products for Fancy Face Cosmetics on March 1, 2012. Gardner’s favorite lipstick and three favorite shimmer shades were included in the Maddie Loves Shimmer collection.
Gardner was selected as one of the “Cheer Channel’s Superstars of All Stars.” Other nationally famous all-star cheerleaders in attendance included Kiara Nowlin, Apple Graceffa, Gabi Butler, Whitney Love, Kelsey Rule, Cami Branson, Erica Englebert, and junior newcomer Bianca Treger. They were among of the elite group that appeared as guest stars in the spirit industry’s first web series, Secret Diary of an American Cheerleader, created by the Cheer Channel. On May 28, 2012, the episode debuted on the Cheer Channel Online Network and YouTube, starring actress Neva McIntosh as Emma Franklin. On September 9, 2012, the show aired on channel 64 in Southern California as part of the Cheer Channel cable block.
